Welcome to The Refinery,

Today Pastor Amanda brings a message that is a reminder for now.

Your Name, Child of God

What’s in the Name? My intention is to bring a word of encouragement for your soul and a reminder of how precious it is to be a child of God.

Consider the definition of NAME

Noun, a word or set of words by which a person or thing is known, addressed, or referred to.

As I ponder on this word Name, everything has one, everyone has one, everywhere geographically has one, the word seems so vast, so big, can you picture an ocean of water, have you been out at sea before? Maybe on a fishing trip? Perhaps on a cruise.

The word Name is like that, so vast, so expansive, so deep.

Beneath the surface of that vast expanse of ocean, there is a whole other world to explore.

The marine life, the coral, the rock formations, the vegetation, so complex, this is what it is like to dive into the word name. There are so many layers and so many details.

What does NAME mean in Hebrew?

The Hebrew word for a “name” is שם (shem, Strong’s #8034). A mark or memorial of individuality, the word name means HONOUR AUTHORITY CHARACTER

So ones honour authority and character is revealed in name. IN SHEM.

In our society we are used to thinking of names as labels, for convenience to help us distinguish one person, place, or thing from another. Whether it be a well laid out pantry at home, or a road map to get us from A to B.

In Jewish thought, however, a name is much more than merely convention.

The Hebrew word shem, name, has two pictures MEM (looks like a wave of water) and SHIN (looks like two front teeth) and these two pictures are the central letters of the word neshamah, soul.

Shem has two pictures, sandwiched between two other pictures, so in other words

our names relate to who we are in our essence, providing a window into our soul.

Until next time
